In the meantime we are continuing to assist in the battle at the AMA meeting in Houston to get the AMA to do the right thing and support patients and doctors and not government medicine. An emergency resolution to rescind the AMA's support of the Pelosi bill may make it onto the agenda on Sunday.
AAPS Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Kathryn Serkes, was on the ground yesterday in Houston for the "AMA Shout-Out" rally and has sent in the following report:
AAPS Board of Directors member Juliette Madrigal Dersch, spoke to the large crowd gathered for the Tea Party Express stop at the Sam Houston Race Park. She told them how her patients are better served because she does not let the government and insurance companies tell her what is best for her patients. Click here to see photos of Dr. Madrigal-Dersch speaking at event.
Back in downtown Houston, outside the AMA meeting, about 150 people chanted, yelled, and talked for almost 2 hours and 3 television stations came out to report on the event. (We will pass footage along as it becomes available.) David McKalip, M.D. took a break from the AMA meeting and spoke to the assembled crowd. The AMA staff was on lookout through park for the hour or so beforehand checking out what we were up to.
The one casualty of the day was our Take Back Medicine sign, which mysteriously disappeared from the tree it was attached to.
AAPS Director of Policy and Public Affairs Kathryn Serkes was on the ground November 5th, at the Capitol for the "House Call on Congress" event and reports the crowd between 20-25 thousand. She interviewed doctors, nurses and others who attended.
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann asked for people "to come Washington DC by the car load." this Thursday. She held a press conference on the steps of capitol on Thursday November 5th at noon to tell Pelosi what she can do with the Pelosi health care plan, she will face an uphill battle.
WHAT: Health Care “House Call” on Washington Press Conference
WHO: Republican Members of Congress
Actor Jon Voight, Radio Host Mark Levin, and others.
WHEN: Thursday, November 5, 2009 from 12:00-2
WHERE: West Front of the U.S. Capitol (House Side)
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann released the following statement as the House of Representatives approaches a vote on the Democrats’ health care reform proposal:
“The American people spoke loud and clear at town hall meetings all across the country throughout August. But, it would appear that Congress didn’t hear a word they had to say. The Democrats’ latest health care proposal unveiled late last week may be packaged a little differently, but it’s the same old bad bill as before.
“This bill is a trillion-dollar, budget-busting, government takeover of our health care system. It will put bureaucrats between people and their health care. It will lead to rationed care, hurting the most vulnerable amongst us first. It will break the bank, leaving our children to pay the bill with diminished freedoms and dwindling prosperity.
“The American people need to stand up again and make sure that Congress hears them this time. Speaker Pelosi is putting her bill on fast track to a vote – and it remains to be seen if the House will even get a chance to vote on the commonsense Republican alternatives. The people need to make a House Call on Washington this week and tell their Representatives to vote no to a government take-over of one-fifth of our economy. This is gangster government at its worst.
“I urge all Americans to come to Washington this Thursday. Come and meet up with your Representative and tell them that you want to control your health care.”
AT 12:30 EST all around the country, citizens will join with those on the Capitol steps to sing "God Bless America."
The reason we choose that is because many of the "tea party" folks are beyond angry -- they have tried everything, and have not been heard. And we don 't want to give the media a chance to unfairly portray them as an "angry mob" again. So instead, we'll remind them why we are all fighting so hard.
H.R. 3962 - READING ROOM
We know that most Members of Congress won’t read the bill,
but our doctors did!
This week we had doctors across the U.S.A. reading the bill and posting their comments about it.
Also, we held a LIVE reading room in Washington, DC.
